UFC build continues

 Above are the boards that I will be testing. The smaller is the dagger that fits into the Hobie drive well and uses a Hobie TI centerboard. The larger is a lee board that fits to the side of the boat. My hopes is that the dagger board will be enough. It weights 8 lbs. Because the lee board has to come up the side of the boat it is much longer and heavier at 14 lbs. It has stainless rods imbeded into it for stiffness, has a nice NACA 0012 foil. Which will be better will be found in testing. The dagger should be more efficent due to the end plate (bottom of boat) The lee boards on faster boats suck air down the length of the board at speed just like rudders do so I am hoping the nice foil will limit that.
 This is the nylon plates that I replaced the 1/4 alum plates with in an attempt to lighten the boat. If they work it would be saving half the weight of the alum and aprox 6 lbs.
This is how the boat looks 12-14-11, hull finished painting and mast supports being welded and added. Covers for storage being installed, they will be held in place by bungees and should be waterproof as long as the covers stand in place and the boat remains upright. Inverted the air pocket should keep water out but it will not be airtight so righting the boat will take on some water but should not be a great deal. This will be found out in self rescue tests. No completion date has been set. This boat was started first week of Oct., 2011.and has been worked on very on and off as time permits after work and some on weekends.

UFC Building Hull Photos

These steps show how easy it is to build a Hull without any formers or strongback.
STEP 1 glue ply together making 24' panels.
Step 2 Glue on 3/4 sq. stringers to panels.
Step 3 Cut out two each forming bulkheads.
Step 4 Glue in bulkheads to one side.
Step 5 and then the other side.
Step 6 pull in the ends, secure, pull string down center to make sure the bulkheads are in the center, let dry.
Step 7. Add wedge blocks to ends top and bottom.
Step8. Add bottom runners and glue.
Step 9. Add first sheet of ply to bottom.
Step 10. Then the center end plys.
Step 11,12.Then the remainder of the ply.
, To get a hull to this stage took 4 days.

Ultra Fla. Challenge Trimaran update

I am really glad that I took some watertribers advise and painted the Hull. It is going to be well protected and much cleaner through the water due to less drag from the smooth finish. Yes it added many hours and more than 10 lbs. but my piece of mind is comfortable now. It is much like my flying days. The saying was-" It is much better to be on the ground wishing that you were in the air than in the air and wishing you were on the ground".  My water line surface will no longer be on my mine. If it takes damage I will know that I did all that I could within reason.
If you look close you can see the reflection of the rudder foil in the Hull.
I recieved Chief's Big 16 classic amas and will start mounting those and doing final assembly and hope to be testing by years end. As of today it is 3 months until the Everglades challenge so I should have time to test and make adjustments. If completed by years end I should have 2 months of trials and adjustment.

Tri first float test. Boat loaded to 575 lbs total. This should be max all up sailing weight. Empty aprox.275. It is drafting just under 7 inches with mirage drive well open. Cockpit floor is 8 1/4 above bottom so should be self draining. Hull weight as is 126lbs and still needs top finished and 2nd layer at Waterline and below.
